Ask people what the fastest racquet sport in the world is and it is likely that most would say tennis, or even squash.  Few would come up with badminton, but those who did would be right.  A shuttlecock, struck by one of the top players in the world with a modern racquet, can travel up to 493km/h. Not bad for a piece of equipment made from sticking goose feathers into a piece of cork.

The Arnold Classic SA 2016 promises to be an awesome festival of sport to be held during May 2016.  In support of this multi-sport and exhibition extravaganza, Badminton South Africa will be hosting its own Premier Badminton Festival during this time to not only promote the sport of Badminton during this awesome event, but also to display  the quality of badminton in South Africa.

To achieve this, the space allocated to Badminton South Africa will be used to construct two badminton courts.  The one to be used for the Premier Badminton Festival and the other one to provide space for interested persons to have a go at the sport.

The Premier Badminton Festival will be a high profile competition and this tournament promises to showcase SA’s top badminton players in an exciting, “fast” team tournament with teams competing for the title of Premier Badminton Festival Champions.  The teams will consists of 2 men and 2 women and will play against each other in a Sudirman Cup format.  This format includes a men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles.  The tournament will be supported by a number of professional officials, including umpires, service judges and line judges.  The tournament will span the 3 days and will ensure continuous high quality badminton on the court.

The other court will be used to promote the sport of badminton and provide interested festival visitors the opportunity to have a try at badminton.  The court will be available throughout the event and a number of different events will be taking place on the court at specific times.  The programme of what will be showcased on this court is still to be finalised and will be made available closer to the time so that festival visitors can plan their visits.
